Introduction to Solonex Tablet

Solonex Tablet is an antibiotic used for the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis (TB) and inactive (latent) TB (a serious infection caused by bacteria that affects the lungs and in certain cases other parts of the body). It works by killing the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Solonex Tablet should be used in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It is to be taken on an empty stomach. Do not skip any doses and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping it early can result in treatment failure and increase the side effects too. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Simply take the next dose as planned.

Your doctor may monitor your liver function while on treatment with this medicine. Avoid drinking alcohol as this may have additional adverse effects on the liver. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using this medicine.

Consuming alcohol while taking Solonex Tablet may cause symptoms such as flushing, increased heart beat, nausea, thirst, chest pain and low blood pressure (Disulfiram reaction).

How To Use Solonex Tablet

  • Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Solonex Tablet is to be taken empty stomach. Avoid Solonex Tablet with tyramine-rich food such as cheese, smoked fish, meats and some types of beer.

You may experience unusual tiredness, constipation or acne while on treatment with Solonex. Please inform your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking to avoid interactions that may reduce effectiveness of any treatment or aggravate side effects

Is Solonex safe?

Yes. Solonex is safe if used at prescribed doses for the prescribed duration as advised by your doctor

Is Solonex an inducer or inhibitor?

Solonex is an inhibitor (decreases activity) of an important liver enzyme system that is responsible for the final processing and elimination of several drugs from the body

What bacteria does rifampin kill?

Rifampin is a common medicine used to treat LTBI. It kills the sleeping TB germs before they make you sick. It can take many months for the medicine to kill the TB germs because they are strong.

Does Solonex cause weight loss/weight gain/hair loss/diarrhea/affect menstruation?

Changes in body weight (gain/loss), hair loss, diarrhea or changes in menstruation are not among the known side effects of Solonex. You may experience few of these side effects while on multi drug (including Solonex) treatment for tuberculosis

Does Solonex affect birth control?

Solonex has no known interaction with commonly used oral contraceptives (birth control pills). However, multidrug treatment for tuberculosis contains active drug rifampin that decreases the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and hampers birth control.

Is rifampicin an antibiotic?

Rifampicin is an antibiotic which is prescribed to treat a variety of serious infections. It is frequently prescribed to treat tuberculosis (TB).

Is Solonex a sulfa drug?

No. The chemical structure and mechanism of action of Solonex is different from sulfa drugs

Is Solonex chemotherapy/chemotherapy drug?

Solonex is a primary antibiotic used for treatment of tuberculosis. Do not confuse it with chemotherapy or chemo drugs used for the treatment of cancer

How long should rifampin be taken?

When rifampin is used to prevent the spread of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria to other people, it is taken twice daily for 2 days or once daily for 4 days.

Is Solonex a MAOI?

Solonex has very weak inhibitory activity on enzymes monoamine oxidases (MAO) however it is not used as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)

What is the use of pyrazinamide?

Pyrazinamide kills or stops the growth of certain bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB). It is used with other drugs to treat tuberculosis. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Can I take isoniazid with ibuprofen/Benadryl/Nyquil/Aleve/Mucinex/amoxicillin?

There no known serious drug interactions of isoniazid with ibuprofen, paracetamol (trade name: Tylenol), naproxen (trade name: Aleve), amoxicillin or any active drug present in Nyquil or Mucinex. Please inform your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking to avoid interactions that may reduce effectiveness of any treatment or aggravate side effects

Does Rifampin cause liver damage?

Hepatotoxicity. Liver injury from rifampin is uncommon, but well documented. Long term therapy with rifampin is associated with minor, transient elevations in serum aminotransferase levels in 10% to 20% of patients, abnormalities that usually do not require dose adjustment or discontinuation.

What is the function of rifampicin?

Rifampicin inhibits bacterial RNA polymerase, thus it is commonly used to inhibit the synthesis of host bacterial proteins during recombinant protein expression in bacteria. RNA encoding for the recombinant gene is usually transcribed from DNA by a viral T7 RNA polymerase, which is not affected by rifampicin.

Rifampicin can cause reversible renal failure probably by an immunologic mechanism that mainly causes an interstitial nephritis, especially during intermittent treatment, when the patient has been irregular in taking daily rifampicin or when the drug has been resumed after an interval of three days to 3½ years.
