Swallow the tablet whole without chewing. Ranitidine can be taken with or without food. To prevent heartburn and acid indigestion, take ranitidine 30-60 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that can cause indigestion. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours unless directed by your doctor.

Avoid taking aspirin and other painkillers used to treat arthritis, period pain or headache. These medicines may irritate the stomach and make your condition worse. Contact your doctor who may suggest other medicines. Avoid coffee, tea, cocoa and cola drinks because these contain ingredients that may irritate your stomach. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Eat slowly and chew your food carefully. Try not to rush while having meals. You should stop or cut down on smoking.

Ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac, belongs to a class of antacid drugs called H2 blockers, or histamine-2 receptor agonists.

Rantac would be effective only if used for the right indication in the dose and for the duration as advised by the doctor. In its latest communication, the USFDA requested manufacturers to withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter versions of Ranitidine. The move followed ongoing investigation into the contaminant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable human carcinogen or cancer causing substance, the USFDA said.

These medicines (Rantac and Omeprazole) work by reducing the amount of acid made by the stomach, to give relief of symptoms and allow healing to take place.

Alcohol does not interfere with the working of Rantac. But, you should avoid taking alcohol as it may further damage the stomach, delaying your recovery.
