Introduction to PTU Tablet

It is group of drug called anti-thyroid agents.

It is used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland). It reduces the production of thyroxine, a thyroid hormone, by the thyroid gland.

It may be taken with or without food and take as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking it without your doctors advice.

PTU Tablet is an anti-thyroid medication. It works by reducing the amount of thyroid hormones produced by the thyroid gland.

How To Use PTU Tablet

  • Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. PTU Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Propylthiouracil (PTU) is an oral medication that is used to manage hyperthyroidism which is due to an overactive thyroid gland. It is an anti-thyroid drug that has a mechanism of action that is similar to methimazole (Tapazole). Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.

Can you take PTU on an empty stomach?

Food in your stomach may change the amount of methimazole that is able to enter the bloodstream. To make sure that you always get the same effects, try to take methimazole at the same time in relation to meals every day. That is, always take it with meals or always take it on an empty stomach.

When should I take PTU?

PTU must be taken every day in equal doses at equal intervals during the day. If your doctor tells you to take 2 doses per day you would take each dose 12 hours apart. If your doctor tells you to take 4 doses per day you would take each dose 6 hours apart. Take your medicine at about the same time each day.
