Phenotil Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Diphenoxylate and Atropine, which treats diarrhoea. Diphenoxylate is an opioid agonist which works by decreasing contraction of the intestines making the stools more solid and less frequent. In higher doses, diphenoxylate may cause euphoria (elevation of mood) and physical dependence. To prevent its abuse, atropine is added in small quantities. Therefore, if Phenotil Tablet is taken in greater than prescribed doses, unpleasant side effects due to excess of atropine (dry mouth, excessive thirst, increased heart rate) will occur.
