The drug is used to treat drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms and Parkinson's disease. Amantadine also has antiviral properties and was previously used in the treatment and prevention of influenza A infections.
It should be used cautiously in liver patients; dose adjustmnet may be required.

Amantadine blocks the reuptake of dopamine in the brain by inhibiting its release and improving motor control in Parkinson's disease. It also has NMDA receptor antagonist properties which helps in reducing dyskinesia.
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder causing rigidity, tremors, and slowed movement due to dopamine deficiency in the brain.
