Neosporin H Ear Drop is a combination of two medicines: Polymyxin B and Neomycin. Polymyxin B kills bacteria by destroying the bacterial cell membrane. Neomycin stops bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Together, they eradicate your infection effectively.
Neosporin H Ointment is used as a first aid antibiotic to prevent infections caused by bacteria in minor cuts, scrapes, or burns on your skin. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria, thereby clearing the infection.
Topical corticosteroids (eg, 1% hydrocortisone cream or a more potent 0.1% betamethasone cream) can decrease inflammation and itching. Patients should avoid using cotton swabs, water, and other potential irritants in the ear, because these will aggravate the inflammatory process.
This medication treats only bacterial ear infections. It will not work for other types of ear infections. Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
Neosporin H Ear Drop is to be used only in the affected ear in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Wash your hands before using this medicine. To put this medicine into the ear, hold the dropper close to the ear. Avoid touching the dropper.
Neosporin side effects A rare but serious side effect of neomycin is hearing loss, which has occurred in people using other forms of neomycin. It is unlikely that you would absorb enough of this medicine through your skin to cause this effect. Call your doctor at once if you notice any changes in your hearing.
An ointment or cream may be applied to the canal, a dressing/wick may be inserted with an ointment or cream on it, drops or a spray may be prescribed if appropriate. Research has found that oral antibiotics do not appear to work as well as those applied directly to the affected ear.
Due to the known ototoxic and nephrotoxic potential of neomycin sulfate, the use of NEOSPORIN® in large quantities or on large areas for prolonged periods of time is not recommended in circumstances where significant systemic absorption may occur.
Usually, Neosporin H starts working soon after applying it. However, it may take some days to kill all the harmful bacteria and make you feel better.
Penicillin is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating ear infections. Penicillin antibiotics are typically prescribed by doctors after waiting to see if the infection clears on its own.
No, do not stop applying Neosporin H and complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured.
