It works by blocking an enzyme that converts testosterone into a hormone that causes the prostate to enlarge. By inhibiting this enzyme, it helps reduce the size of the prostate. However, it's essential to continue taking the medication for the ongoing effect on prostate size.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged and causes problems with urination. The prostate is a small gland that produces fluid for semen and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. When the prostate grows bigger, it can squeeze or block the urethra and make it hard to pee. BPH can cause symptoms such as frequent or urgent need to pee, difficulty starting or stopping the urine stream, weak or interrupted urine flow, dribbling at the end of urination, and feeling like the bladder is not completely empty.
