It is a supplement which contains vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol It is generally used to treat or prevent vitamin D deficiency and bone disorders It is crucial for the absorption of phosphorus and calcium within the body and promotes immune functions and bone health
Vitamin D3 synthesizes upon the exposure of sunlight in the skin and plays an important role in Phosphorus and calcium homeostasis. It also promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestines, and supports bone formations and maintenance. It also modulates the immune system as well as provide support to overall health.
Deficiency of vitamin D3 because rickets, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, and hyperthyroidism. Due to deficiency of vitamin D3 bones become fragile and soft. Current guidelines say adults shouldnt take more than the equivalent of 100 micrograms a day. But vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so your body can store it for months and you dont need it every day. That means you could equally safely take a supplement of 20 micrograms a day or 500 micrograms once a month.
Vitamin D is less expensive to produce and therefore is the form most commonly found in fortified food products. Vitamin D3 mainly comes from animal sources such as fish oil, fatty fish, liver, and egg yolks. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces vitamin D3.
Vitamin D with calcium is used to treat or prevent bone loss (osteoporosis). Vitamin D is also used with other medications to treat low levels of calcium or phosphate caused by certain disorders (such as hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, familial hypophosphatemia).
Check the label on your vitamin D3 supplement for the number of drops or amount of liquid you need to give your baby. Read the instructions each time. You may need to give your baby the supplement in a different way with each new brand. Give your baby the correct dose directly into their mouth.
Simply adding an over-the-counter vitamin D supplement can make improvements in just three to four months time. Vitamin D with a strength of 2000 international units daily is the recommended dose for most adults. However, youll want to chat with your doctor to find whats right for you.
Place each dose on the tongue, allow it to dissolve completely, and then swallow it with saliva or water. You do not need to take this medication with water. Certain medications (bile acid sequestrants such as cholestyramine/colestipol, mineral oil, orlistat) can decrease the absorption of vitamin D.
2,500 to 3,000 IU a day for children 1 to 8 years old. 4,000 IU a day for children 9 years and older.
All things considered, a daily vitamin D intake of 1000–4000 IU, or 25–100 micrograms, should be enough to ensure optimal blood levels in most people. 4000 IU is the safe upper limit according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Make sure not to take more than that without consulting with a health professional.
Vitamin D is also inversely related to the sleep hormone melatonin. This makes sense, because, if we are getting our vitamin D naturally with help from the sun, we are synthesizing it during the day. So its usually better to take vitamin D supplements in the morning.
No one developed hypercalcemia or any adverse events. The major finding of this case series is prolonged daily dosing of vitamin D3 with doses of 10,000 to 60,000 IU was safely tolerated.
Vitamin D deficiency can be easily corrected by Vitamin D supplementation or some lifestyle changes. In a vitamin D deficient person, oral 60,000 IU per week for 8 weeks followed by maintenance dose of 60,000 IU per month is a reasonably safe method to correct the deficiency."
