Sulfamethoxazole competes with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to inhibit bacteria from producing dihydrofolic acid which is necessary for bacterial growth. Trimethoprim works by inhibiting a specific enzyme (hydrofolate reductase) to prevent the conversion of dihydrofolic acid into tetrahydrofolic acid, a step essential for bacterial DNA synthesis.
