Introduction to Alspas Tablet

Alspas Tablet is taken with food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your healthcare team know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

The most common side effects are dryness in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, blurred vision, and weakness. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects. This medicine can also cause dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can worsen your sleepiness.

Before taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.  You should also tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you.

How Alspas Tablet works

Alspas Tablet is a combination of three medicines: Dicyclomine, Diclofenac and Paracetamol, which relieves abdominal pain and cramps. Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic. It works by relaxing the muscles in the stomach and gut (intestine). It stops sudden muscle contractions (spasms). By doing this, it relieves cramps, pain, bloating, and discomfort. Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and Paracetamol/Acetaminophen is an antipyretic (fever reducer). They work by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers in the brain that cause pain and fever.

  • Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Alspas Tablet is to be taken with food.

Yes, the use of Alspas can cause dry mouth. If you experience dry mouth, drink plenty of water. Take regular sips during the day and keep some water by your bed at night. You may use lip balm if your lips are also dry. Try to avoid foods that are acidic (like lemons), spicy and salty.

Can the use of Alspas cause diarrhea?

Yes, the use of Alspas can cause diarrhea. In case of diarrhea, drink plenty of water or other fluids. Also, avoid taking fatty or fried foods along with this medicine. Talk to your doctor if diarrhea persists. Do not take any other medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Can the use of Alspas cause damage to the liver?

Alspas contains paracetamol. This medicine is known to cause harm to the liver especially in the doses above the recommended level. Also, avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may further increase your risk of liver damage. Use of this medicine should preferably be avoided in patients with the underlying liver disease. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any early signs and symptoms of liver damage. These symptoms may include fever, rash, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, stomach pain, dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, and abnormal liver enzymes.

Can I take a higher than the recommended dose of Alspas?

No, taking a higher than the recommended dose of Alspas can lead to increased chances of side effects. If the recommended doses do not relieve your symptoms or you experience increased severity of pain, please consult your doctor for re-evaluation.

Can I stop taking Alspas when my pain is relieved?

Alspas is usually used for short term and can be discontinued if there is no pain. However, it should be continued if your doctor told you to do so.

What are the instructions for the storage and disposal of Alspas?

Keep this medicine in the packet or the container it came in, tightly closed. Store it according to the instructions mentioned on the pack or label. Dispose of the unused medicine. Make sure it is not consumed by pets, children and other people.

Are there any specific contraindications associated with the use of Alspas?

The use of Alspas is considered to be harmful for patients with known allergy to any of the components of this medicine. It should be used carefully in patients with alcohol dependency, or with underlying kidney or liver damage.
