Methergin Injection is a prescription medication containing Methylergometrine (0.2 mg), primarily used to prevent and control excessive bleeding after childbirth, known as postpartum hemorrhage. As a semi-synthetic ergot alkaloid, it works by stimulating uterine muscle contractions, thereby reducing blood loss during the postpartum period.
Effective management of postpartum hemorrhage is crucial, as it is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Methergin Injection plays a vital role in enhancing uterine tone and ensuring safer recovery after delivery.
Alcohol consumption may exacerbate certain side effects or interfere with the medication's efficacy.
Methergin Injection is contraindicated during pregnancy due to its potent uterotonic effects, which can induce premature labor. It is intended for use only after the delivery of the baby.
Methylergometrine can pass into breast milk and may affect the nursing infant. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for at least 12 hours after the last dose. Milk produced during this period should be discarded.
Caution is advised for patients with impaired kidney function. Dose adjustments may be necessary, and close monitoring is recommended.
Caution is advised for patients with impaired liver function. Dose adjustments may be necessary, and close monitoring is recommended.
Some patients may experience dizziness or headaches after receiving Methergin Injection. It is advisable to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery
Methergin Injection contains Methylergometrine, which directly stimulates the smooth muscle of the uterus. By increasing the tone, rate, and amplitude of rhythmic contractions, it induces a rapid and sustained uterotonic effect. This action helps shorten the third stage of labor and reduces blood loss by promoting the delivery of the placenta and minimizing uterine atony. The onset of action is immediate when administered intravenously and within 2-5 minutes when given intramuscularly.
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is excessive bleeding after childbirth, commonly defined as blood loss of more than 500 mL following vaginal delivery or 1,000 mL after cesarean section. It is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. PPH occurs due to uterine atony (failure of the uterus to contract), retained placental tissue, or clotting disorders.
Methergin Injection, containing Methylergometrine (0.2 mg), is a widely used uterotonic agent that effectively prevents and manages postpartum hemorrhage. It works by stimulating uterine contractions, reducing the risk of excessive bleeding after childbirth. The injection is administered under strict medical supervision, either intramuscularly or intravenously, and provides rapid action within minutes.
While generally well-tolerated, caution is advised for patients with hypertension, heart disease, or liver dysfunction. Proper postpartum care, including hydration, rest, and blood pressure monitoring, ensures optimal recovery.
